Of all the castles I’ve explored in France, the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg stands out as a true marvel of medieval architecture and restoration. Perched high on a rocky spur in the Vosges mountains, this fortress transports you back in time. It’s a great glimpse into the rich history of Alsace, and a must-visit destination while you’re there!
Located about an hour’s drive from the picturesque town of Colmar, Haut-Koenigsbourg is easily accessible by car. If you’re relying on public transportation, there are buses that run from Sélestat train station to the castle during peak tourist seasons. I recommend renting a car if possible, as it allows you to explore the beautiful Alsatian countryside at your own pace.
As you wind your way up the forested hillside (whether by car or bus) the anticipation builds. Then, suddenly, you turn a corner, and there it is – the imposing silhouette of Haut-Koenigsbourg, its reddish-brown sandstone walls standing in stark contrast against the lush green surroundings. The sight is truly breathtaking!

There’s ample parking available at the base of the castle. You can also park along the side of the road if the parking is full. From there, it’s a short but steep walk up to the entrance. Don’t worry if you’re not up for the climb – there’s a shuttle service available if needed.
When I visited, tickets were around 9 euros for adults, with discounts available for students and children. It’s worth checking their official website before you go, as they sometimes offer special events or exhibitions that might influence ticket prices.

As you cross the drawbridge and step through the main gate, you’re immediately transported to another era. The courtyard, with its well and period-accurate decorations, sets the stage for your castle visit!
One of the things I loved most about Haut-Koenigsbourg is how well-preserved and authentically restored it is. Unlike some castles that feel more like museums, this one truly gives you a sense of what life might have been like for its medieval inhabitants.

Climb to the top of the stairs in the castle for panoramic views that stretch across the Alsatian plain all the way to the Black Forest in Germany. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of the Swiss Alps in the distance! I wasn’t lucky enough to be there on a clear day, so I couldn’t see the alps, but I spent a good half hour up there with my friend Liz trying to see through the fog! It was still an impressive view even when it was foggy!

Inside the castle, you’ll find a series of rooms that showcase different aspects of medieval life in Colmar. The Kaiser’s Hall, has impressive and intricate woodwork.
Also as you walk along the halls you will discover the kitchen, complete with a massive fireplace and collection of copper cookware. You can still find smaller versions of the oven in this room in the houses of the locals, especially in the houses of those who love to embrace the Alsacian culture!

As you explore, you’ll notice informative panels in both French and English, providing context and historical details. They help you understand the castle’s rich history, from its origins in the 12th century to its restoration in the early 20th century.
One of my favorite spots in the castle is the armory! The impressive collection of medieval weapons and armor is fascinating, and it’s fun to imagine the knights who might have wielded these very swords centuries ago.

After you’ve explored the interior, take some time to walk along the ramparts. The views of the surrounding Alsatian countryside are spectacular, and you’ll get a real sense of the castle’s strategic importance.

Before you leave, you can stop by the gift shop to explore. They have a good selection of books, replicas, and local goods. I didn’t indulge in purchasing any because I was low on money, but it’s definitely an option!
After exploring the gift shop, I highly recommend exploring some of the hiking trails that surround the castle. This is time consuming, but is a very good use of your time if you have it!
The Vosges mountains offer beautiful forest walks, and you might even stumble upon some ruins of other, lesser-known castles in the area. (You can also purposefully seek them out using Google maps as your guide.)
Visiting Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle is like stepping into a living history book. Whether you’re a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates a good view, this Alsatian gem is sure to leave a lasting impression.

So, what are you waiting for? Add Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg to your Alsace itinerary and prepare for a magical journey through time! Trust me, as you stand on those ancient walls, gazing out over the Rhine Valley, you’ll feel like the king or queen of your very own fairytale. I know that I sure did!
