Auxerre is a town filled to the brim with history, culture, and charm. I lived there for almost two months where I met the locals, learned the culture, and explored the town!

While there may not appear to be many possible activities, I learned that there are actually plenty of things to do in Auxerre!

Here’s my guide to the best things to do in this picturesque town:

Auxerre’s city center is a delightful maze of medieval streets. They all offer a glimpse into the town’s past and the locals’ culture! Start exploring at the Place de l’Arquebuse, a square surrounded by charming cafes and historic buildings. You can find where it is by following google maps, because the google maps in Auxerre is updated well.

From there, wander through the streets and discover the half-timbered houses, Renaissance mansions, and Gothic churches that make up Auxerre’s architectural landscape. My favorite part of the city center is the old clock tower that looks like it’s straight out of the past, with an antique design.

2. Visit the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne

Dominating the skyline, the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne is a must-visit landmark of Auxerre. This example of Gothic architecture has intricate stained glass windows, and a soaring nave. It’s adorned with sculptures, which are fun to look at, and add a lot of detail to the cathedral.

Don’t miss the chance to explore the cathedral’s walkways and the nearby Bishop’s Palace, which is now the Museum of Auxerre.

3. Stroll Along the Yonne River

The Yonne River adds a picturesque element to Auxerre, and is one of the things Auxerre is known for. A stroll along the riverbanks has beautiful views of the city and its historic bridges, such as the Pont Paul-Bert. You can see the cathedrals create an iconic skyline that you will surely remember Auxerre for.

The riverbanks are also lined with pleasant walking paths and as you follow the river, and you will run into numerous parks that create great spots to relax after a long day of travel.

4. Discover the Abbey of Saint-Germain

For anyone who enjoys history, the Abbey of Saint-Germain is a must-visit. It was founded in the 9th century, and this former Benedictine abbey is renowned for its Romanesque architecture and well-preserved murals and paintings. To experience local life and flavors, head to the Auxerre Market, held every Wednesday and Saturday at the Place de l’Arquebuse. This vibrant market includes an array of regional products, including fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, cured meats, and pastries. It’s the perfect place to experience the culture of Auxerre, as you are sure to meet locals as you browse their produce or buy their pastries. The museum of Auxerre can be found in the Bishop’s Palace, and it offers a diverse collection of artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to the modern era. The museum’s exhibits are a mix of natural history and art history.

It has regional archaeological finds, medieval art, and signs which share more of the history of Auxerre’s culture. It’s a great way to delve deeper into the area’s rich cultural heritage.

7. Visit the Maison de l’Absinthe

A visit to the Maison de l’Absinthe is always unique experience. This small museum is all about the ghost of l’Absinthe. It’s an intriguing look at its history and cultural impact.

Auxerre may not be as famous as some of France’s larger cities, but it offers a wealth of experiences that make it a worthwhile destination. It is a bit tricky to travel from Paris to Auxerre because you must take connecting trains, but when you’re there there is a lot to explore and enjoy!
