Out of all the activities that Saint-Malo has to offer, visiting the Scultped Rocks is one of the best! It was one of my favorite things that I experienced from my time in the town.
If you are visiting Saint-Malo, the sculpted rocks, or in French, Les Rochers Sculptes are an entertaining, affordable experience that kids and adults alike love. You will not regret adding this activity to your Saint-Malo Itinerary!
What are the sculpted rocks in Saint-Malo?
Along the coastline of Saint-Malo, you will find some of the prettiest beaches that you can imagine. Among these is a mini-exhibit where you can see a story of pirates and folklore be told in scultped rocks around you.
The area where the sculpted rocks were was smaller than I originally expected, but there is no lacking of scultped rocks. As you explore, you will find more faces than you can count! Seriously, if someone was able to count them all it would be a lot of hard work. There’s not only faces hidden withing the carved stone, but also creatures such as an alligator.

Some of the faces are tiny, but most are much bigger than a real head! There is so much personality to every single one of the carved rocks.

You are allowed to touch the rocks, walk and climb over them, and sit on benches that were carved out. It is truly a perfect place to visit for explorers and people who love adventures and figuring out little details.

Then if you want to, you can climb down (I say climb, but I didn’t use my hands as I just stepped from rock to rock on my way down) past the sculpted rocks and explore the rocky coast just below. Let me tell you that the pictures I got down in this area are some of the most magical I have. There are little tide pools to explore, and perfect picture spots that make you look like you’re either in a princess movie or an adventure film. There’s a ledge that the waves crash up against where you can stand and get some epic shots.

How much does the Sculpted Rocks in Saint-Malo Cost to visit?
Now let’s talk ticket prices. It will cost you 5€ for adults and 3€ for children- so not bad at all! Once you pass the initial sign and walk through the parking, you will follow the signs until you see a small shack and someone there to take tickets.
If you end up buying any souvenirs in the souvenir shop , just know that you can only use a card to purchase if your total is over 5€, so if you just want a postcard, it’s better to buy it while you are also buying your tickets. While you’re at the gift shop, you can also buy sculpted rocks, magnets, or the famous Bretagne (Brittany) Bowls that can be customized with your name.

If you are using a car to get around Saint-Malo, there is a parking lot right next to the rocks, but there is a small parking fee. It varies in price throughout the season but is never more than 5€ an hour. (It should take you about an hour to see the rocks.)
What is the story behind Saint-Malo’s Sculptured rocks?
In 1870, after a man named Abbe Foure suffered a stroke and was paralyzed in one half of his body, he decided to hide out on the cliff sides and start to carve rocks. Along with an elderly man, Foure carved them for the last 25 years of his life. His legacy lives on in the sculptured rocks that he left for us to enjoy.

When is the Sculpted Rocks in Saint-Malo Open?
The sculpted rocks beach is not always open, but has specific hours which consist of 9 am to 7 pm every day of the week.
The ticket person takes a lunch break everyday at 12 until 1, so make sure to plan accordingly.
The fact that it’s open on Sundays and Mondays means that it’s a great option for when so many other activities will be closed.
What should I know before visiting the Carved Rocks in Saint-Malo, France?

Be careful as you walk down the steps, because they have been slightly eroded from all of the visitors and can be a bit slippery.
